Shearling is the skin of a freshly shorn lamb or sheep. The skin is tanned with the wool left on, creating a smooth leather suede hide on one side and a soft fur textile on the other side.

Genuine shearling is thicker, heavier, and far smoother than synthetic shearling, often referred to as sherpa. You can tell shearling from sherpa by noting how much air can pass through the fabric - natural shearling is a porous material that allows for a warm yet comfortable and breathable wear.

The best way to clean your shearling garment is to get it professionally cleaned by someone with experience in leathers and furs. If you need to clean your shearling by yourself, start by hand blotting the spot with cool water and a gentle detergent or castile soap. Be sure to give attention to stains as soon as possible. Once the stain has been cleaned, use a towel to spot-dry your shearling, then let it air dry. To avoid frequent cleanings, shake your shearling out after each wear to dislodge dust and dirt.

While shearling is warm, cozy, and suitable for cold weather, it is not a waterproof material and should not be worn in pouring rain or snow storms. Light rain and snow will not damage your shearling. When the garment is fully dry, simply brush off water stains with a lint brush.

Store your shearling coats, jackets, vests, and other garments away from direct sunlight in a dry place. You can use breathable garment bags to protect your garment from dust, dirt, and other possible damage. Be sure to hang your shearling coat, and use a durable hanger. Shearling coats should not be stored in plastic or folded.
